Lydia Carline
Biography
Lydia Carline is a Fine Art BA and Royal College of Art MA graduate who also gained an MSc in Forensic Art and completed the MSc in Human Anatomy at the University of Dundee, where she graduated with Distinction.
Her research carried out for the dissertation and final project of the MSc Forensic Art course resulted in an anatomical facial reconstruction, which has been placed on permanent display within the Surgeons’ Hall Museum, Edinburgh.
She has since worked on a freelance basis specifically on numerous medical/anatomical illustrations for the Royal College of Surgeons of England within the Wellcome Museum of Anatomy and Pathology for trainee surgeons, project entitled 'The Surgeon's Roadmap'. Other examples include but are not limited to life science illustrations for the Wellcome Trust Centre for Gene Regulation and Expression and the Centre for Microscopy both at the University of Dundee, pathophysiology illustrations for Bayer, and the development and manufacture of anatomical models and structures at the Royal College of Surgeons of England for the neuro-simulation ‘Head Trauma” training course, with one of the models placed on display within the Hunterian Museum. She has also been involved in various illustrations including nerves, vessels and the soft and hard tissues of the face for The Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS), Finland, on the first facial transplant in a Nordic country.
Specialising in the traditional medium of pencil, with finished pieces coloured digitally if required, the knowledge gained through in depth dissection during the MSc in Human Anatomy, as the Anatomy Prosector at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and at St George's, University of London as well as her time as Lecturer in Anatomical Sciences at St George's, has further enhanced subsequent illustrations, which are traditional highly detailed anatomical, surgical and life science pieces, along with medical models.
