Mandy Miller

My formal art training began at Middlesex University (previously Hornsey College of Art) under the direction of Mr Philip Wilson. I attained a first class BA(Hons) degree with commendation, in graphic communication design and scientific illustration. I gained skills in traditional media and used pen and ink, pencil and watercolour in my artwork.

An interest in the anatomy of people with Down’s Syndrome provided the direction for my M.Phil. research at The University of Manchester’s medical school, under the supervision of Mr Richard Neave and Professor Valerie Newton. I carried out a two year research program that gathered data from thirty subjects and applied statistical analysis to consider the presence of anatomical anomalies in the Down’s Syndrome auricle, and how they might affect hearing-aid use.

Whilst working for Margot Cooper at Limbs and Things Ltd, in Bristol, I was involved in the research and development of surgical training models and progressed initial ideas through to first prototypes. I acquired knowledge of modelling and mould making, working with materials such as wax, clay, alginate, plaster and silicone.

At Marks Creative Ltd, a London based healthcare graphics studio, I held the position of medical illustrator and became accomplished in digital illustration, digital 3D modelling, 2D and 3D animation and video editing. I managed illustration projects ranging from patient education to product launch material. Currently, I work in a freelance capacity and specialise in orthopaedic, medical device, surgical technique and anatomical illustration. I have been a registered medical illustrator and member of the MAA since 1998, serving on council and presently holding the role of Treasurer for the Medical Artists’ Education Trust.
